In a residential environment, student items and decorations carry risk of fire hazards. Various appliances are prohibited due to their significant fire risk, including air conditioning units, space heaters, open-coil appliances, electric blankets, hot plates, grills, toasters and toaster ovens. The only appliances allowed on campus are small microwaves, and refrigerators that are 2 cubic feet or less in size.

Extension cords and surge protectors should not be overloaded or chained together. Flammable materials are prohibited, including natural Christmas trees, flammable liquids, fireworks, and explosive gasses of any kind. Open flame, including candles or lighters, is prohibited in residence halls. Tampering with smoke detectors, electrical outlets, or other building systems is prohibited.

Personal possessions and decorations may not block or obstruct fire or emergency exits, doorways into student rooms, and windows. Although standard curtains and/or blinds are permitted in windows, other window coverings are prohibited.
